Perhaps I am a bit late to the party. I have never been a giant Dolly fan. Too much un-ironic kitsch and big hair were blocking my view. But, the unexpected lyrics of this bizarre song during a wildly on-topic scene of Amazon Prime's Utopia - and I was down a Dolly rabbit hole.
15 illuminating minutes later, Dolly Parton ranks pretty darn high in my own quirky Pantheon (more on that another time).
6 reasons I fell in adoration at second sight:
Dolly Parton is unabashedly, unapologetically herself - and all signs indicate that Dollyhood is a pretty good time.
She is gracious, sweet and accepting of all-comers, yet has a core of solid titanium.
Her femininity is a huge part of her power - and it is never tawdry.
Her fearlessness in creativity is limited only by her own strong boundaries, and she works her tushie off creating magic.
She is completely invested in her own value, which contradicts none of her generosity and kindness.
And speaking to my own heart, the sentiment and freedom of this quote to the Guardian, “I don’t feel I have to march, hold up a sign or label myself. I think the way I have conducted my life and my business and myself speaks for itself.”
